Different Delivery modes
This allows you to choose the level of security for your assessment. You can choose between 'Any browser' (No Security), 'Any browser with security (Medium Level Security), and 'Lockdown App' (High-Level Security) modes.
Any browser (No Security) :
Students can take the test using any standardized browser including Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. The students do not need to install anything. Browser-based assessments can be used for formatives, quizzes, homework, low-stakes assessments, etc. These assessments offer no security and students are allowed to access files and websites during the assessment.
Any browser with Security (Medium Level Security) :
Students can take the test using any standardized browser including Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer but with medium-level security. The students do not need to install anything. In this mode, if the student anywhere clicks outside the test window while taking the test, the teacher would be notified in the teacher's monitoring view. In addition to this, the student will get a 'Focus lost alert' and is required to submit an explanation to re-enter the test.
In the Monitoring view, the teacher can view which students got a focus lost alert, how many times, for how long, and what their explanations are. This is visible to the teacher both during and after the assessment.
Lockdown Application (Highest Level Security) :
This mode allows the teachers to deliver the exams via a highly secure application, which operates in lockdown mode. The application makes it impossible for the students to access other files and programs on their computer, copy-paste, and take screenshots during the test. The application requires active internet to open the test and submit the final responses online. The lockdown application is quick and easy to install and is available for Windows (SEB), Mac OS, and iOS.
Here, you can find more information about how to install and take a test using Lockdown apps.
When and How to allow "Any Browser with Security" for a High-security assessment?
There might be situations during an assessment when you have to allow a particular student to take/continue an assessment in browser with security mode. This might happen under the following circumstances:
- The Lockdown application stops working or there is a technical issue during the test.
- The student's computer stops working during the assessment and the student has to continue the test from another device.
In the above-mentioned cases, it is advisable to allow the student to take the test in "Browser with security" mode and the issue with the lockdown application can be troubleshot later. To do this, enable "Allow Browser with Security" from the Deliver tab.
Once "Allow browser with security" has been enabled for the student, they will see a "?" icon on their start test page. Simply click on the "?" icon to start the start in "Browser with Security" mode.
Which security level should I use?
The Lockdown Application only works on Windows, Mac OS, and iPad devices and requires an installation. The student needs to install the application just once and after it is installed on the student's machine, we recommend using Lockdown App for all your summative assessments.
If the student is using any other device like a mobile phone, android tablet, or Linux machine then you should use 'Any Browser(with or without security). When using the lower security level (i.e., “Any browser”), no installation is needed. This makes it very quick and easy to try out AssessPrep with the students. Depending on the importance of the exam, this may well provide a satisfactory level of security.
Regardless of the security level, we recommend that you monitor your students in the classroom the same way as you would during a normal pen-and-paper examination. No security level will remove the possibility of a student using a crib sheet or a hidden mobile phone, for example.
